Project Controls · WEREP PERSPECTIVE

A credible schedule explains the work behind the date

Whether the team uses Primavera P6 or Microsoft Project, the useful question is the same: what makes the forecast believable?

Connect scope, logic, and ownership

A delivery date is easier to assess when the schedule shows the work required to achieve it. Use activities that reflect meaningful work, with clear ownership and relationships that represent real handoffs.

Review the logic with the people responsible for delivery. An activity that appears independent may rely on information, access, or an approval that is not yet represented. The schedule becomes more useful when those conditions are visible.

Challenge the assumptions that shape the forecast

Calendars, duration estimates, constraints, and resource availability all influence the result. Ask whether they reflect the working environment and whether important exceptions have been recorded.

A fixed date entered into a tool does not by itself demonstrate a feasible plan. Review the sequence and the conditions needed to meet it. Explain where the team has confidence and where further information is required.

Update progress and explain the movement

Agree the progress information needed from activity owners and the reporting date it represents. Distinguish completed work from the current estimate of remaining effort.

Compare the updated outlook with the baseline and explain significant changes in terms the business can use. A schedule review should end with the activities, decisions, or dependencies that require attention, not simply a new set of bars on a chart.

Use the review to identify a next action

Ask the activity owners which condition is most likely to change the current forecast. It may be an unresolved design choice, a resource conflict, a supplier handoff, or incomplete information from another workstream.

Document the next action and the point at which it needs to be resolved. This makes the schedule a shared management tool and helps stakeholders distinguish uncertainty that can be monitored from a condition that needs immediate attention.
